The adventures of a post captain. Volume III, [mid 18th century].

Volume III only of a manuscript narrative satirical poem in couplets; contains part of Chapter V, and Chapters VI and VII. The sixteen-chapter poem traces the escapades of Bowsprit, a young British naval officer, during the Napoleonic Wars. In the present excerpt, the hero enjoys a successful night of gambling with Lord Flimsy, but the two incur large debts during a second night. Flimsy quickly leaves the country, while Bowsprit returns to sea. Bowsprit, now a Rear-admiral, receives orders to invade the stronghold of pirates on the Barbary coast. His fleet is scattered by a storm in the Atlantic, and stop at Gibraltar for repairs, where Bowsprit courts and then gilts a Castilian woman. The fleet arrives in the pirates' waters and prepares for attack.
